History

Meckley Farms was established in the spring of 1985 with a 365 acre farmland purchase by Gerald and Rebecca Meckley. Nestled in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this unique farm is located approximately 5 miles east of historic Sistersville, WV along WV-Route 18. Meckley Farms began as a small West Virginia family farm with the goal of breeding commercial livestock, while practicing down-home values and living a simple way of life. Gerald and Rebecca raised four children on the farm, all of whom became college graduates and successful young professionals in various fields. Alongside their parents, the children continue to take pride in working, managing, and expanding the farm.

Meckley Farms has grown exponentially over the years into what has become a multi-breed, multi-farm operation.  The largest expansion in the farm’s history took place in the spring of 2012 when Shaun, the eldest of the Meckley children, and his wife Carrie returned to Sistersville and established their veterinarian clinic.  The couple purchased the largest adjacent farm and the eq, once owned by Kenneth and Annabelle Fletcher.  In adding more than 220 acres of mainly agricultural fields and pastures to the original property, the farm could begin adding more cattle. The acquisition of the Fletcher farm allowed for the successful introduction of the Hereford breed into what had been primarily a Limousin and Angus operation.  The registered herds were also able to expand at Meckley Farms, leading to the successful seedstock operation of today.  In the spring of 2005, Meckley Farms was able to acquire the haying rights to the fields and bottomland of the neighboring Starcher and Wells farms.  The rich cropland soils that once grew corn provided the farm operation the additional amount of hay necessary for more expansions to the herds.  Todd and Jamie joined into ownership of the farming operation in the spring of 2016, purchasing an eight acre tract of property in Waverly, WV.  This operation serves primarily as the farm’s weaned bull and heifer wintering and growth facility.

The farm presently operates at over 600 acres of owned land and approximately 250 acres of neighboring hayfields, bottomland, and managed pastures.  New upgraded facilities and improvements to the existing barns and buildings, waterlines, feeding and water bunks, weight scale system, electrical wiring, and interior of the main house began in the summer of 2013 and were complete in the fall of 2014.  Upgrades to the farm also included a new 75 horsepower Kubota tractor, purchased in the spring of 2012, a New Holland mower conditioner and round baler, in the spring of 2013, and a Featherlite hauling trailer, purchased in the summer of 2015..

Meckley Farms has come a long way from its humble beginnings to the medium-scale livestock production and seedstock operation of today, and it continues to grow and improve. Though the farm has become much larger and very diverse in its nearly 30 years of operation, it has, and always will, remain family-managed and family-run with the cooperation, love, and dedication to hard work it was originally built upon.
